... studied medicine at the University of Mainz from 1982-1988 and obtained his M.D. degree in 1988. From 1988-1995, he worked as a postdoc at the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the Medical School Hannover (MHH). In 1995, he received the university teaching credentials for medical microbiology. In 1999, he was appointed as professor and associate director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the MHH. In 2002, he accepted the position as Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Molecular Immunology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), Ohio, USA. In 2008, he moved back to Germany to become Professor of Immunology and the founding Director of the Institute for Systemic Inflammation Research at the University of Lübeck. In addition, he kept his ties with Cincinnati as adjunct professor of pediatrics at CCHMC. His research focuses on the innate immune system, in particular the inflammatory and regulatory roles of the anaphylatoxins and their cognate receptors in allergic, autoimmune and infectious diseases. Dr. Köhl has published more than 150 original articles and reviews in international peer-reviewed journals. His research has been continuously funded by the DFG, BMBF or the NIH since 1990. In a joint venture with CCHMC, he leads the International Research Training Group 1911 as a platform for PhD and MD students, who are interested in the immunoregulation of inflammation in allergy and infection.
